(The Hundred and Eight Names of the Noble Avalokiteśvara).
Homage to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
Thus have I heard at one time. The Bhagavat, the Noble Avalokiteśvara, was dwelling at the peak of Mount Potalaka, a place scattered with many types of fragrant flowers, appearing like the fine-colored gold of the Jambu River, and consisting of various precious gems.
f.173.b / vol.93
Surrounded by many tens of millions of billions of devas, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans, [they all] paid homage to the Bhagavat, honoring him and holding him in high regard. Having worshiped and revered him, they circled him, gazed upon him, and he taught the Dharma — a holy life that is virtuous in the beginning, virtuous in the middle, and virtuous in the end; meaning that is excellent, words that are excellent, unmixed, completely perfect, entirely pure, and truly radiant.
Then, Brahmā and the others praised the Noble Avalokiteśvara:
"O Bhagavat, you who have attained realization, who have done what was to be done, who have laid down the burden, who have achieved your own purpose, who have completely eradicated the fetters of existence. Through perfect wisdom, your mind is thoroughly liberated; you are the all-knowing one. You are like a great elephant, having reached the far shore of the supreme power of all sentient beings. You have perfected the collection of wisdom; you have crossed over the wilderness of existence. You are a benefactor to others, possessing a heart connected with compassion. You are supreme in your kindness toward all beings, a granter of great happiness. You are engaged in loving-kindness, skilled in liberating boundless sentient beings. You are the son of the Sugatas, the sole support of the three realms of existence. You possess no desire, you possess no hatred, you possess no ignorance. You have abandoned the three stains. You have reached the far shore of the three knowledges; you have attained the six superknowledges. You are as broad and expansive as a banyan tree. You possess the thirty-two marks of a great being and are adorned with the eighty secondary characteristics. Your skin is delicate and golden in color. Your body is tall, excellent, and radiant. Your crown protuberance resembles a fresh shing flower or a long red [lotus]. Your head is covered with many curled locks of hair. You are illuminated by the rays of light from Amitābha. Your brilliant light, extending for a fathom, is renowned like a golden mountain…
f.174.a / vol.93

[You] possess discipline; you possess mindfulness; you possess great power and skill; you possess noble qualities; you possess loving-kindness; you possess tranquility; you possess morality; you possess good fortune; you possess purpose; you have mastered all meanings; you cut through all doubts; you teach all Dharmas; you are the teacher of all worlds. Whoever practices the praise of the one hundred and eight names of the Noble Avalokiteśvara will have the karmic obscurations of the five inexpiable actions purified. They will be qualified to enter into all maṇḍalas. They will attain the accomplishment of all secret mantras. For many hundreds of billions of eons, they will not be reborn in the lower realms. They will not enter into the states of inexpiable suffering.
Whoever rises in the morning and recites, reads, or chants this [text], their body will not be afflicted by leprosy, chronic skin diseases, tuberculosis, or any discomfort; they will be liberated from all illnesses. In every lifetime, they will remember their past lives. They will become like a son of the devas. At the time of death, they will be reborn in the realm of Sukhāvatī. In every lifetime, they will not be separated from the Noble Avalokiteśvara.
By constant recitation, one will become sharp-witted. One will become courageous. One’s voice will become melodious. One will become fortunate. One will become fearless in all teachings. One’s speech will become dignified.
If one performs the praise through this practice of eulogy, it is the same as having made offerings to as many Buddhas, Bhagavats as there are grains of sand in sixty-two Ganges rivers; the ripening [of merit] will be equal and without difference."
[This concludes] the Hundred and Eight names of the Noble Avalokiteśvara.
